Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Design and Optimization of BioNanocomposites for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Kostas, Rabia Yasa; Altuner, Elif Esra; Elmas, Muzaffer

Bio-nanocomposites, produced from renewable resources, stand out as one of the promising next-generation material classes for both biomedical and environmental applications due to their biocompatible and biodegradable structures. However, the vast and complex design space of these materials, which depends on numerous variables including the type of biopolymer matrix and the type and concentration of the nanostructured filler, makes their optimization quite challenging with traditional “trial-and-error” based research methods. This study provides a general overview of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based methodology that holds the potential to overcome this complexity. In this context, the limitations of the traditional “forward screening” approach are discussed, and the “inverse design” paradigm, based on the idea of “designing a material with desired properties,” is proposed as a solution. The study outlines the potential roles of various AI tools in this field, from supervised learning models to deep learning approaches and optimisation algorithms. This theoretical framework is substantiated by practical case studies that range from drug delivery to sustainable packaging. The case studies demonstrate how AI not only enables the prediction of properties but also facilitates strategically developing materials for a particular function, thereby accelerating the discovery process. Finally, current challenges, such as data scarcity and the interpretability of models, are addressed, and future visions to overcome these obstacles, including physics-informed AI, autonomous discovery platforms, and human-AI partnerships, are discussed. It is concluded that this synergy has the capacity to stimulate a new era of innovation in sustainable materials science.

Sustainable Ammonia Production, Advances in Electrochemical, Photoelectrochemical, and Photocatalytic Technologies for Green Energy

Shahin, Musarat; Mohsin, Abdul Haseeb; Bibi, Aiman; Ahmad, Ihtisham; Altuner, Elif Esra; Aldemir, Ozan; Durmusoglu, Senol; Yilancilar, Mehmet Sabit; Tanriverdi, Yavuz; Acar, Esra

Substantial advances have been made since the 1970s in reducing the environmental impacts of ammonia production. Renewable-driven electrochemical synthesis offers a promising pathway to decarbonize ammonia production. This review examines an integrated route in which hydrogen is generated photoelectrochemically under concentrated solar irradiation and subsequently used in electrochemical ammonia synthesis. Photoelectrochemical cells are fabricated by electrostatically depositing photosensitive particles onto cathodes to enhance light-driven hydrogen production. Hydrogen production rates and ammonia yield depend strongly on temperature and electrolyte composition. The synthesized hydrogen is fed into a molten salt electrochemical reactor that operates at atmospheric pressure and receives nitrogen from a dedicated supply. This combined solar–electrochemical approach can produce low-carbon ammonia with improved safety and reduced environmental impact, offering a scalable alternative to conventional processes.

Smart Nanocarriers and AI-Driven Release Systems for Targeted Antibiotic Delivery

Kostas, Rabia Yasa; Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra; Elmas, Muzaffer

The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis is not merely a consequence of the emergence ofresistant pathogens. Furthermore, the remaining shortcomings oftraditional antibiotic production and development processes have become a profound health threat, exacerbated by their pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic limitations. This book chapter redefines the AMR crisis as a problem of drug and treatment discovery as well as drug delivery to target tissues, and examines the technological angle emerging at the intersection of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in response to this problem. This review begins by examining the problems inherent in traditional antibiotic architecture, such as systemic toxicity, low bioavailability, poor stability, and, most importantly, the inability to penetrate protected sites such as bacterial biofilms or intracellular bunkers. This study, initiated by the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC), develops and validates a rubric-based approach for evaluating institutional quality assurance (QA) processes within the Turkish higher education ecosystem. Effective quality assurance (QA) in higher education requires evaluation tools that are methodologically robust, responsive to institutional needs, and aligned with international benchmarks. A rubric-based approach offers a structured and transparent framework for consistent assessments. The rubric was created through an iterative, evidence-based process incorporating expert feedback, international benchmarks, site visits, and prior research. It consists of 22 main criteria across four key domains—Leadership, Governance and Quality; Learning and Teaching; Research and Development; and Service to Society—subdivided into 46 sub-criteria, each assessed on a five-point maturity scale. The validity and reliability of the rubric were rigorously examined. Content validity was established through evaluations by 10 QA professionals, addressing four key dimensions: relevance, alignment with the intended domain, appropriateness for the target audience, and clarity of language. Construct and criterion validity were assessed through consistency checks and usability analyses, with data collected from 252 external evaluators across 57 higher education institutions. Additionally, 360-degree feedback was gathered from both external evaluation teams and the institutions involved in the evaluation process. Results: demonstrate strong content validity (Lawshe coefficient = 1.00, p < .05), high interrater consistency, and strong usability across various evaluator groups. Further evaluation confirmed the rubric's applicability and robustness across diverse institutional contexts. This study concludes that the developed rubric is a reliable and valid tool for enhancing and evaluating quality assurance practices in higher education.
