The Impact of Upper Extremity Rehabilitation on Fatigue in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review

Şekercan, Gizem; Akbaş, Ecem Karanfil; Salcı, Yeliz

Background: Although numerous interventions have been investigated to alleviate fatigue in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), evidence regarding the effects of upper extremity rehabilitation on fatigue remains limited. Objective: The objective of this review was to evaluate and synthesize the available evidence on the effects of upper extremity rehabilitation interventions on fatigue in PwMS. Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus was performed up to August 2026. Studies were eligible if they investigated the effects of upper extremity rehabilitation interventions on fatigue in PwMS. The risk of bias of randomized controlled trials was assessed using the Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2), and the certainty of the evidence was appraised using the GRADE methodology. Results: Nine studies including 250 participants (136 intervention, 114 control) met the inclusion criteria. The included studies evaluated a range of technology-assisted, exercise-based, home-based, and task-oriented upper extremity rehabilitation approaches, with some interventions incorporating more than one therapeutic or technological component. Fatigue outcomes were measured using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS). Risk of bias was low in three randomized controlled trials, with some concerns in two and high in two; among the two crossover studies, one was rated as low risk and one as high risk. GRADE assessment showed low certainty of evidence for studies using the FSS and very low certainty for those using the MFIS, indicating an overall low certainty of the available evidence. Conclusions: The available evidence is insufficient to draw definitive conclusions regarding the effects of upper extremity rehabilitation on fatigue in PwMS. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are required.

Corporate Social Responsibility, Carbon Pricing, and Corporate Performance: A Bibliometric Review of an Emerging Research Nexus

Atik, Murat; Bintaş, Gül Çiçek Zengin; Bulut, Ekrem

This study employs bibliometric methods to examine the structure, thematic integration, and conceptual evolution of the literature at the intersection of corporate social responsibility (CSR), carbon pricing, and corporate performance. Its primary objective is to map research streams on CSR and reporting, carbon pricing, and firm performance that have evolved relatively independently and to synthesize them within a common analytical framework that clarifies the conceptual structure of this triadic nexus and identifies areas where these streams remain insufficiently connected. Bibliographic records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection for the period 2015–2025 were analyzed using a three-stage bibliometric design. Study 1 examines CSR and reporting in the context of carbon pricing; Study 2 investigates the relationship between carbon pricing and firm-level performance and strategic outcomes; and Study 3 examines the triadic intersection of CSR, carbon pricing, and corporate performance. Publication activity follows a nonlinear trajectory but increases markedly after 2022, particularly in studies addressing performance and strategic outcomes. The conceptual analyses show that disclosure, governance, and legitimacy are prominent along the CSR and reporting axis, whereas environmental regulation, innovation, efficiency, cost, investment, and managerial decision-making dominate the performance axis. Within the triadic nexus, disclosure–performance–determinants, climate change–legitimacy–social responsibility, and CSR–management–carbon market decisions emerge as the principal conceptual structures. Thematic analysis identifies CSR–management–cost and climate change–legitimacy–social responsibility as motor themes, while the disclosure–performance relationship constitutes a central basic theme. Viewed through the lenses of Stakeholder Theory, Legitimacy Theory, the Resource-Based View, and Institutional Theory, the findings indicate that carbon pricing is conceptualized not merely as an environmental cost or regulatory instrument but as a broader strategic governance mechanism linking disclosure, corporate legitimacy, managerial capabilities, and performance outcomes. By integrating three research streams that have largely been examined separately, this study clarifies the field's intellectual architecture and thematic integration and highlights the role of carbon pricing in connecting CSR, governance, and corporate performance.

A new surgical path planning framework for neurosurgery

Kurt Pehlivanoğlu, Meltem; Ay, Eren Cem; Eker, Ayşe Gül; Albayrak, Nur Banu; Duru, Nevcihan; Mutluer, Ahmet Serdar; Dündar, Tolga Turan; Doğan, İhsan

Background: Despite using a variety of path-finding algorithms that use tracts, the most significant advancement in this study is considering the values of all brain areas by doing atlas-based segmentation for a more precise search. Our motivation comes from the literature’s shortcomings in designing and implementing path-planning methods. Since planning paths with curvatures is a complex problem that requires considering many surgical and physiological constraints, most path-planning strategies focus on straight paths. There is also a lack of studies that focus on the complete structure of the brain with the tracks, veins, and segmented areas. Instrument dependence is another inadequacy of the methods proposed in the literature. Aims: The aim of this study is to design a new surgical path planning framework that helps to plan the surgical path independently of the instrument, considers the entire structure of the brain, and allows curvilinear surgical paths. Thus, neurosurgeons can generate patient-specific possible optimal surgical pathways before the neurosurgical procedure. Materials & Methods: The proposed framework includes different path-finding algorithms (Dijkstra, A*, and their aggressive variants) that find optimal paths by taking the risk scores (surgeons assessed all the segmented regions, considering the extent of damage. In this evaluation, scores ranged from “0 to 10,” with the most critical areas receiving a score of “10,” while the least possible affected areas were assigned a score of "0") for sensitive brain areas into consideration. For the tract image processing the framework includes fractional anisotropy (FA), relative anisotropy (RA), spherical measure (SM), and linear measure (LM) methods. Results: This is the first paper to handle tracts and atlas-based segmentation of the human brain altogether under a framework for surgical path planning. The framework has a dynamic structure that gives the flexibility to add different path-finding algorithms and generate different widths of surgical pathways. Moreover, surgeons can update the score table to guarantee minimally invasive surgery. The output file format of all the extracted surgical paths is NRRD, so it can be easily visualised, analysed, or processed over the third part software tools. Discussion: In this study, we generated many possible surgical pathways then these pathways were evaluated by the surgeons the results were impressive because the framework could identify surgical pathways used in real-world surgery that correspond to the standard pathways such as anterior transsylvian, trans sulcal, transgyral, and sub-temporal. Conclusion: This study proposes a new surgical path planning framework for neurosurgery. Moreover, in the future by adding/adopting different parameters (such as operation time, and short and long-term complications after surgery) to the proposed framework, it would be possible to find new surgical pathways for difficult surgical conditions.
