Darabi, Rozhin; Karimi-Maleh, Hassan; Altuner, Elif Esra; Gulbagca, Fulya; Tiri, Rima Nour Elhouda; Chinnathambi, Arunachalam; Brindhadevi, Kathirvel; Halvaci, Ebru; Sen, Fatih

Activated carbon based Cobalt nanoparticles (Co@AC NPs), considered in the context of hydrogen energy, which is a renewable and sustainable energy, were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and their catalytic activities were tested. For this, hydrogen production tests were carried out with the help of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) methanolysis of Co@AC NPs synthesized by the thermal method. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier transmission spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization tests were performed. According to the TEM characterization result, it has been observed that the NPs have a spherical shape and an average size of 2.52 ± 0.92 nm. Then, using the catalytic studies, it was observed that hydrogen production’s reusability is found to be 86%. The activation energy (Ea), enthalpy (∆H), and entropy (∆S) values were found to be 20.28 kJ⋅mol−1, 17.74 kJ⋅mol−1, and −125.97 J⋅mol−1 K−1, respectively. The obtained values have yielded excellent results and guide future sustainable and renewable hydrogen energy studies by reducing costs, ensuring environmental sustainability by avoiding the formation of undesirable by-products, and producing hydrogen from NaBH4 through its high catalytic properties.

    Commercialization of quinone-based drugs

Altuner, Elif Esra; Sen, Fatih; Dar, Umar Ali

In this chapter, the antibiotic drug effects of quinone and quinone derivatives are discussed in detail. Today, antibiotic drugs used against harmful pathogens work for a certain period, but these drugs become useless after a certain time or after a certain dose. This is because harmful microorganisms become resistant to these antibiotics after a certain threshold. For this reason, searches have been made that can replace antibiotics and are harmless. Quinone and quinone derivatives are one of these researches. Quinone and its derivatives show antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties against various microorganisms. Quinones have the structure of cyclic diketones. Therefore, it is an advantage that it gives radicals easily as it resonates easily and thus has antioxidant properties in this reaction. The main quinone-based drugs used as antibiotic drugs are as follows: anthracyclines, mitomycin C, mitoxantrone, aziridinylbenzoquinones, streptonigrin, lapachols, and actinomycin D. Some of these drugs have anticancer and some have antitumor properties. This chapter can offer details on quinone and quinone derivatives-related commercial drug research.

Uzumer, Tugce Yagmur; Cete, Servet; Tekeli, Yener; Altuner, Elif Esra

In this study, a new amperometric biosensor was developed for glucose determination. For this purpose, polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film was prepared by electropolymerization of aniline and pyrrole with poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) on a platinum plate. The best working conditions of the polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film were determined. The glucose oxidase enzyme was immobilized by the entrapment method in polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film. Glucose determination was made based on the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide, which is formed as a result of the enzymatic reaction on the surface of the prepared biosensor at +0.40 V. The working range for the glucose determination of the biosensor was determined. The effects of pH and temperature on the response of the glucose biosensor were investigated. The reusability and shelf life of the biosensor were determined. The effects of interference in biological environments on the response of the biosensor were investigated. Glucose determination was made in the biological fluid (blood) with the prepared biosensor. This study has a feature that sheds light on biosensor studies to be developed for the detection of substances in the human body, such as glucose, uric acid, and urea. This article will set an example for future scientific research on the development of a sensor for other biological fluids in the human body, such as the sensor developed for blood samples.
