In this study, the antioxidant activity, antimicrobial effect, and fatty acid composition of the bark of the Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) grown in Burdur Province (Türkiye) were investigated. Red pine bark extracts were analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteau method for total phenolic content, the DPPH test for free radical scavenging activity, the FRAP test for reduction power, and the carotene-linoleic acid test to determine antioxidant activity. Red pine bark was found to have a significant antioxidant effect. The total phenomenon, expressed as gallic acid, was found to be 287.31 mg GAE/100 g, while the free radical inhibition rate was found to be 93.94%. The results were compared with the standard antioxidants BHA and BHT. The antimicrobial activity of the chloroform, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts of red pine bark was examined against four bacteria strains using the microdilution method, and their fatty acid compositions were determined using a GC-FID device. Although it showed no activity against Staphylococcus aureus, it produced remarkable results against Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli in particular. Therefore, it was found to have a good antibacteria effect and an important fatty acid profile for industry with long-chain (24-carbon) saturated and long-chain unsaturated fatty acids. While the SFA value was high (89.23%), C24:0 (lignoceric acid) was the predominant fatty acid with a proportion of 51.5%, followed by C22:0 at 28.38%.

Objective: Toys in kindergartens are frequently exposed to environmental contaminants and hand contact, making them potential reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms. Children, with developing immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to infections. This study aimed to detect Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and coliform bacteria on toys and to characterize toy materials using FTIR, XRD, and SEM. Methods: Swab samples were collected from toy surfaces under aseptic conditions and transported under cold-chain conditions. Samples were homogenized in buffered peptone water and serially diluted. Coliforms were detected on VRB and BGBLB media, E. coli on TBX medium, and S. aureus on Baird-Parker Agar with Egg Yolk Tellurite. Identification was confirmed via Gram staining, catalase, DNase, hemolysis, and carbohydrate fermentation tests. FTIR assessed functional groups, XRD examined crystalline structures, and SEM observed surface morphology related to microbial adhesion. Results: Bacteriological analysis showed Staphylococcus spp. (35.33%), S. aureus (5%), E. coli (1%), and coliforms (3.66%). FTIR revealed diverse polymeric structures, XRD showed varying crystallinity, and SEM indicated heterogeneous surface roughness and irregular microstructures facilitating bacterial adhesion. Conclusion: Combining microbiological analyses with FTIR, XRD, and SEM provides a comprehensive method for assessing contamination risks. Kindergarten toys can harbor potentially pathogenic microorganisms, and the structural characteristics of toy materials significantly influence microbial persistence.

Green chemistry is defined as a set of principles that reduce or prevent the use or generation of hazardous substances during the design, production, and utilization of chemical products. The vision of such a paradigm shift in the chemical sciences is that the concept of being green is directly introduced to the molecular design process and is centered on atom economy and the prevention of waste. This review examines the principles of green chemistry in relation to agro-industrial waste valorization, with specific reference to the ecological and economic conditions of India, where approximately 350 million metric tons of annual agro-residues have become a source of serious environmental management issues, such as greenhouse gas emissions through open burning, leachate waste generation through landfills, and effects on the health of the population through poor disposal practices. The analysis summarizes the latest developments in nanotechnology-based catalytic systems, new solvent platforms (ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, and supercritical fluids), and integrated biorefineries, and critically reviews the scalability limitations and commercial feasibility. It also discusses more recent developments, such as systems based on nanotechnology, catalyst transformations (homogeneous, heterogeneous, and biocatalysts), and the creation of alternative solvents, such as ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, and supercritical fluids. The virtues of agri-industrial residues and biomass-based feeds are given particular attention in terms of their role in models of the circular economy and the generation of value-added chemicals, fuels, and materials. By illustrating how green chemistry can minimize the environmental footprint of traditional processes and create safer and more economically viable alternatives, this review makes it clear why green chemistry has become a revolution in the field of industrial practice. Lastly, the paper addresses contemporary issues of scalability, economic competitiveness, and regulatory integration and outlines opportunities that will make green chemistry the foundation of sustainable, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible chemical companies.

This study investigates the synthesis, characterization, and application of barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO₃ NPs) as a fluorimetric sensing platform. Nanocrystalline BaTiO₃ particles, exhibiting quasi-spherical morphology with average diameters evolving from approximately 7 to 9 nm depending on reaction time, were successfully prepared via a room-temperature chemical synthesis route. Comprehensive characterization using techniques such as XRD, SAED, TEM, FTIR, and UV–Vis spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a polycrystalline perovskite structure and elucidated the material's morphological and optical properties. The synthesized BaTiO₃ NPs displayed stable, intrinsic fluorescence, optimally emitting at 467.42 nm upon excitation at ∼402.33 nm in a neutral pH environment (pH 7). This fluorescence was observed to be effectively quenched by multiple analytes, including glucose and paracetamol, establishing a basis for the development of a sensor. Quantitative analysis revealed analyte-dependent quenching efficiencies, with Stern-Volmer studies indicating glucose as the most potent quencher among those kinetically analyzed. The system demonstrated sensitive detection capabilities, achieving low parts-per-million (ppm) limits of detection (LOD) for both glucose (∼1.19 ppm) and paracetamol (∼1.04 ppm). Notably, the linear dynamic response range varied significantly, extending up to ∼1.8 ppm for glucose but reaching at least 3.6 ppm for paracetamol. The demonstrated fluorescence stability, coupled with sensitive and analyte-dependent quenching responses, highlights the potential of these BaTiO₃ nanoparticles as a versatile and robust material for developing future fluorimetric sensors.

Substantial advances have been made since the 1970s in reducing the environmental impacts of ammonia production. Renewable-driven electrochemical synthesis offers a promising pathway to decarbonize ammonia production. This review examines an integrated route in which hydrogen is generated photoelectrochemically under concentrated solar irradiation and subsequently used in electrochemical ammonia synthesis. Photoelectrochemical cells are fabricated by electrostatically depositing photosensitive particles onto cathodes to enhance light-driven hydrogen production. Hydrogen production rates and ammonia yield depend strongly on temperature and electrolyte composition. The synthesized hydrogen is fed into a molten salt electrochemical reactor that operates at atmospheric pressure and receives nitrogen from a dedicated supply. This combined solar–electrochemical approach can produce low-carbon ammonia with improved safety and reduced environmental impact, offering a scalable alternative to conventional processes.

The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis is not merely a consequence of the emergence ofresistant pathogens. Furthermore, the remaining shortcomings oftraditional antibiotic production and development processes have become a profound health threat, exacerbated by their pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic limitations. This book chapter redefines the AMR crisis as a problem of drug and treatment discovery as well as drug delivery to target tissues, and examines the technological angle emerging at the intersection of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in response to this problem. This review begins by examining the problems inherent in traditional antibiotic architecture, such as systemic toxicity, low bioavailability, poor stability, and, most importantly, the inability to penetrate protected sites such as bacterial biofilms or intracellular bunkers. Dar, Umar Ali; Altuner, Elif Esra; Akocak, Suleyman; Issa, Ghassan; Ozalp, Veli Cengiz
Increasing utilization of sulfonamide derivatives as antibacterial agents has created serious challenges in terms of environmental pollution and antimicrobial resistance. In this respect, there is a compelling need for a highly sensitive and selective analytical tool for detecting such antibiotics in trace concentrations. This work represents a green strategy for developing an electrochemical biosensor for the determination of 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide based on bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) prepared from peel extract of Citrus reticulata fruit. The phytochemicals present in the peel extracts played a dual role of reduction and stabilization during the synthesis of Ag NPs. Synthesized NPs were well characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV–Vis), and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The Ag NPs showed considerable improvement in electrocatalysis in comparison to the bare glassy carbon electrode. The fabricated sensor gave an excellent linear calibration curve with a high value of R2 (=0.999), along with a low limit of detection (LOD = 0.65 µM) and limit of quantification (LOQ = 2.1 µM).
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Circulating Ghrelin, Nesfatin-1, and Vaspin Levels Across Glycemic Control Categories in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and low-grade inflammation, and adipose-tissue-derived adipokines are increasingly implicated as regulators of glucose homeostasis. This study compared circulating ghrelin, nesfatin-1, and vaspin levels across three glycemic-control categories defined by HbA1c and evaluated their association with glycemic status. Methods: In this cross-sectional comparative study, serum ghrelin, nesfatin-1, and vaspin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 161 adults stratified into three groups: HbA1c 6.0–8.4% (n = 55), HbA1c ≥ 8.5% (n = 52), and non-diabetic controls with HbA1c < 6.0% (n = 54). Distributional assumptions were tested with the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk tests. Because all three adipokines deviated from normality, the primary omnibus comparison was the Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by Dunn’s post hoc test with Bonferroni adjustment; effect sizes are reported with 95% confidence intervals. Group differences were additionally examined after adjustment for age and sex, and HbA1c was analysed as a continuous variable. Results: Ghrelin (Kruskal–Wallis p = 0.726) and vaspin (p = 0.364) did not differ among the three groups. Nesfatin-1 differed significantly (H = 15.16, p < 0.001, ε2 = 0.095) and non-monotonically: concentrations were higher in the HbA1c 6.0–8.4% group than in controls (median 824 versus 650 pg/mL; Dunn p = 0.018) and than in the HbA1c ≥ 8.5% group (824 versus 600 pg/mL; p < 0.001), whereas the HbA1c ≥ 8.5% and control groups did not differ (p = 0.909). The nesfatin-1 difference persisted after adjustment for age and sex (p < 0.001) and after excluding controls with impaired fasting glucose (p < 0.001). Within the diabetic participants, nesfatin-1 correlated inversely with continuous HbA1c (ρ = −0.373, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Nesfatin-1, but not ghrelin or vaspin, differed significantly between HbA1c-defined glycemic-control categories in a non-monotonic manner, with the highest concentrations in the intermediate-HbA1c group. Because body mass index, diabetes duration, and antidiabetic medication were not available, and because the design is cross-sectional, these between-group differences cannot be interpreted as a within-person trajectory or attributed to glycemic status independently of adiposity. These exploratory findings require confirmation in larger, prospective, BMI- and medication-adjusted cohorts before nesfatin-1 can be considered a candidate biomarker.

Memis, Yilmaz; Gunduz, S. Beniz; Altuner, Elif Esra; Tatli, Havva Nur; Ozen, Gurkan; Okudan, Ahmet; Civil, Serife; Dar, Umar Ali
A novel pH-responsive polymeric drug delivery system is developed by covalently binding the active pharmaceutical ingredient paracetamol (PAR) to a synthesized vinyl propionate-co-maleic anhydride (VPR-co-MA) copolymer. The controlled release of PAR from the resulting VPR-co-MA-PAR conjugate was investigated in vitro at various physiological pH values (2.0, 4.5, 7.4, and 9.0) at 37°C over a 6 h-period. A fluorimetric method was utilized to quantify the released PAR, with optimal excitation and emission wavelengths determined to be 330 and 433 nm, respectively. The results demonstrated a distinct pH-dependent release profile. After 6 h, the cumulative drug release was significantly suppressed at acidic gastric pH 2.0 (42.23%), whereas it was substantially higher at neutral and alkaline conditions, reaching 71.29% at pH 7.4 and a maximum of 74.46% at pH 9.0. The pronounced difference in release rates confirms the system's ability to limit premature drug release in the stomach while promoting targeted delivery in the intestinal tract. This VPR-co-MA-PAR conjugate shows significant promise as a carrier for the controlled oral delivery of paracetamol.
