BACKGROUND/AIMS: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has taken its toll on individuals' mental health and physical health worldwide. Nurses, who play a key role in patient care, experience greater fear and anxiety due to their high-risk exposure to COVID-19 infection. This also leads to anxiety among undergraduate nursing students. This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) for Turkish nursing students.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted with 351 nursing students from two different universities in Turkiye between May and June 2020. Participant characteristic form and the Turkish version of FCV-19S were utilized to gather the data. Psychometric tests including language validity, content validity, and reliability analyses were performed.RESULTS: The item total test correlation of all items varies between 0.537 and 0.637. The Explanatory Factor Analysis made to detect the factor design of the scale found the threshold factor loading value as 0.40. The scale's 7 items and single sub-dimension were related to the scale structure to to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The scale Cronbach's alpha value was determined as 0.833. The test-retest results, performed to determine the time invariance, revealed a high level of correlation between the two measurements with the Pearson correlation coefficient (r=0.734; p<0.05).CONCLUSION: A valid and reliable measurement tool was provided to Turkiye to assess nursing students' fears of COVID-19. The Turkish version of the scale can be utilized as a substantial and reliable estimation device in detecting the fear of coronavirus in nursing students.

Prevention of microbial colonization of feeding tubes in the intensive care unit

Ozen, Nurten; Sis Celik, Aslı; Terzioglu, Fusun; Ozen, Volkan; Ozmen, Ozgur; Kose, Sema; Tosun, Betul; Dogan, Nazim; Ardic, Busra; Atabeyoglu Cimen, Bahar

Background: Various microorganisms which increase the mortality rate in the intensive care unit (ICU) cause microbial colonization of the nasogastric tube (NGT) and use the NGT as a reservoir. Aim: To detect the colonization on the NGT and to determine the effect that training regarding hand hygiene, NGT management, and enteral feeding (EF) provided to ICU nurses and auxiliary service staff (ASS) has on the level of NGT colonization. Study Design: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control design was used in this study. Microbial samples were taken from the outer and inner parts of NGT. The microorganisms were categorized as: group 1, no risk; group 2, low risk pathogenic; group 3, high-risk pathogenic group. The training was given to nurses (n = 15) and ASS (n = 7). Hand hygiene, NGT, and EF care training are provided to nurses and ASS by researchers. A total of three training sessions were scheduled to be held in 3 weeks so that all health care staff members were trained. Each session lasted 2 h in total. Patients were assigned to a group if one of the microorganisms presented on the outer surface of the patient's feeding tube and/or on the hub. The hand hygiene compliance was evaluated by direct observation according to the World Health Organization hand hygiene indications. Results: The study was conducted with 46 patients. Evaluating the patients for the presence of microorganisms before education revealed that 4.3% were in group 1, 21.8% were in group 2, and 73.9% were in group 3. After the education, evaluating the samples for the presence of microorganisms revealed that 39.1% were in group 1, 13% were in group 2, and 47.8% were in group 3. A statistically significant difference was found between the number of samples included in the groups after the participants had received training (H = 8.186; p =.017). Conclusions: An NGT could act as a reservoir of microbial colonization and high-risk microorganisms could be on the tube. Providing training not only to nurses but also to ASS will help reduce the risk of colonization. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Eliminating such colonization with effective hand hygiene during NGT feeding is a cost-effective method. Providing training not only to nurses but also to ASS will help obtain the optimum benefit from patient care.

The relationship of perceived social support, personality traits and self-esteem of the pregnant women with the fear of childbirth

Calpbinici, Pelin; Terzioglu, Fusun; Koc, Gulten

This research was conducted to examine the relationship of perceived social support, personality traits, and self-esteem of pregnant women with fear of childbirth. The study was performed between April 15, 2016 and May 15, 2016 using face-to-face interviews with 128 pregnant women who were at 28–40 weeks of pregnancy. A negative correlation between the fear of childbirth and the levels of social support perceived by pregnant women and a positive correlation between the fear of childbirth and self-esteem were observed. Furthermore, a negative correlation between the fear of childbirth and extraversion, self-discipline, and openness to development and a positive correlation between the fear of childbirth and neurotic personality traits were noted. Hence, we propose that social support status, personality traits, and self-esteem of pregnant women should be viewed as risk factors for the fear of childbirth.

Borman, Pinar; Yaman, Aysegul; Denizli, Merve; Yüzer, Ayse; Terzioglu, Fusun

Objective: The aim of this case report is to describe the results of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) in a patient with poliomyelitis and bilateral lymphoedema, and to emphasise the effect of CDT on wound healing. Method: A 48-year-old female patient was given CDT for bilateral grade 3 lymphoedema in the lower extremities and a deep wound on the right foot. She had been diagnosed with poliomyelitis sequela and mobilised with a wheelchair for 26 years. The lymphoedema on both legs and the wound on the right foot sole had been present for five years and eight months, respectively. Detailed wound care had been performed previously upon the green, malodorous infected wound, without healing. The patient received skin care education, manual lymphatic drainage, multilayer bandaging and exercises for 4 weeks in a total of 20 sessions. The improvement was assessed by limb volumes prior to and at the end of the treatments. Results: The right and left lower limb volumes were decreased significantly at the end of treatments (3042cm(3) (R) and 3165cm(3) (L) before versus 2702cm(3) (R) and 2401cm(3) (L) afterward). The wound size decreased considerably and the green malodorous flow ceased. The patient continued self-massage and self-bandaging after hospital discharge. The control follow-up, one month later, revealed a completely healed wound with maintained volume. Conclusion: In conclusion CDT for a duration of 4 weeks in a female patient with poliomyelitis, bilateral lymphoedema and an infectious hard-to-heal wound, improved both the lymphoedema and wound healing.

Transformational leadership practices of nurse managers: the effects on the organizational commitment and job satisfaction of staff nurses

    Uslu Sahan, Fatma; Terzioglu, Fusun

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the perception of nurse managers and staff nurses regarding the transformational leadership (TL) style of nurse managers and determine the effects of the TL practices on organizational commitment and job satisfaction of staff nurses. Design/methodology/approach: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with 153 nurses (17 nurse managers and 136 staff nurses) working in a university hospital. Data were collected from participants through a demographic questionnaire, leadership practices inventory (self/observer), organizational commitment scale and job satisfaction scale. Findings: The self-assessment of the TL practices of the nurse managers were more favourable than the assessment of the leadership practices made by staff nurses. The TL practices of the nurse managers accounted for 9% of the total organizational commitment and 24% of the total job satisfaction of the staff nurses. Originality/value: The results indicated that leadership practices by nurse managers need to show greater awareness of the effects of these leadership practices on the organizational commitment and job satisfaction of their staff nurses. Hospitals need to consider how they develop, support and encourage because of the positive impact TL has on health priorities and retention of staff.

Parents' Needs and Their Perceived Obstacles With Team Members in Perinatal Palliative Care: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study

    Yasar, Beril Nisa; Terzioglu, Fusun

Advances in prenatal diagnosis have made medical, psychological, and ethical issues regarding the diagnosis of fetal anomalies a crucial topic of research. This study identified the needs of parents of unborn babies with fetal anomalies and their views regarding the services of interdisciplinary team members in charge of assisting them. The sample consisted of 30 parents and 40 team members from a women's health education and research hospital. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and were qualitatively analyzed using the phenomenological method of interpretation. The results showed that parents' physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum were not fully met after their unborn babies were diagnosed with fetal anomalies. The results also showed that team members needed a structured program, legal regulations, and training to provide holistic care.
