Integrating natural language processing and social network analysis for risk-based auditing in public banks: A case study from Türkiye

    Atik, Murat; Saglam, Fatih

Effective risk assessment is a critical component of internal auditing in public banks, where conventional methods often struggle to prioritize audit areas from large volumes of unstructured data. This study introduces a multi-stage Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Social Network Analysis (SNA) integrated Decision Support System (DSS) framework to enhance the targeting of audit planning. By reconceptualizing unstructured stakeholder narratives as active control inputs, the proposed framework formalizes the construct of dynamic control documents to capture structural risk patterns that traditional sampling might overlook. Applied to unstructured complaint data from three major public banks in Türkiye, findings reveal that while primary complaint themes vary across institutions—ranging from credit-related issues to card grievances—network-based analysis identifies common systemic interconnections, particularly regarding refund processes. By revealing potential risk indicators and their interconnections, this DSS framework serves as a robust risk-prioritization tool that assists auditors in identifying high-risk scoping areas. The study contributes to the information systems and auditing literature by establishing a theory-grounded mechanism for text-based risk topology mapping in public sector governance. For practitioners, the framework functions as a decision-support mechanism that may assist in audit prioritization and risk scoping through data-informed oversight. Overall, the findings demonstrate that transitioning from descriptive observations to structural risk mapping enables internal audit functions to be more proactive and strategic in an evolving risk landscape.

Akkoyunlu, Buket; Bardakcı, Salih; Yıldırım, Sibel Aksu; Avşaroğlu, M. Dilek; Uludağ, Gonca; Koçer, Ayhan; Elmas, Muzaffer

This study, initiated by the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC), develops and validates a rubric-based approach for evaluating institutional quality assurance (QA) processes within the Turkish higher education ecosystem. Effective quality assurance (QA) in higher education requires evaluation tools that are methodologically robust, responsive to institutional needs, and aligned with international benchmarks. A rubric-based approach offers a structured and transparent framework for consistent assessments. The rubric was created through an iterative, evidence-based process incorporating expert feedback, international benchmarks, site visits, and prior research. It consists of 22 main criteria across four key domains—Leadership, Governance and Quality; Learning and Teaching; Research and Development; and Service to Society—subdivided into 46 sub-criteria, each assessed on a five-point maturity scale. The validity and reliability of the rubric were rigorously examined. Content validity was established through evaluations by 10 QA professionals, addressing four key dimensions: relevance, alignment with the intended domain, appropriateness for the target audience, and clarity of language. Construct and criterion validity were assessed through consistency checks and usability analyses, with data collected from 252 external evaluators across 57 higher education institutions. Additionally, 360-degree feedback was gathered from both external evaluation teams and the institutions involved in the evaluation process. Results: demonstrate strong content validity (Lawshe coefficient = 1.00, p < .05), high interrater consistency, and strong usability across various evaluator groups. Further evaluation confirmed the rubric's applicability and robustness across diverse institutional contexts. This study concludes that the developed rubric is a reliable and valid tool for enhancing and evaluating quality assurance practices in higher education.

Therapeutic potential of adult stem cells-derived mitochondria transfer combined with curcumin administration into ARPE-19 cells in age-related macular degeneration model

Kılıç, Kamil Can; Duruksu, Gökhan; Öztürk, Ahmet; Rençber, Selenay Furat; Kılıç, Buket; Yazır, Yusufhan

Objective: Mitochondria transfer from human Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hWJ-MSCs-mt) and human endometrium-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hE-MSCs-mt), along with curcumin, were explored as potential treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) caused by mitochondrial inefficiency, using a retinal model to assess impacts of curcumin and hWJ-MSCs-mt or hE-MSCs-mt on AMD. Methods: ARPE-19 cells established an in vitro AMD model. Cells were exposed to 0–50 μM curcumin for 24 hours to determine optimal concentration by assessing their viability. Immunofluorescence examined SOD1, TNF-α, and TGF-β levels at optimal hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration. β-galactosidase staining and DCFH analysis evaluated H2O2-induced cellular senescence. Immunofluorescence assessed REP65, CRALBP1 (RLBP1), Pink1, and Parkin expression, whereas qRT-PCR analyzed Nrf2, Ire1a, ARMS2, HTRA1, RPE65, RLBP1, NOX4, and TOMM20 expression following co-treatment with curcumin and hWJ-MSCs-mt or hE-MSCs-mt. Results: Curcumin improved ARPE-19 cell survival under H2O2-induced oxidative stress by regulating SOD1, TNF-α, TGF-β, DCFH, and MDA levels. hWJ-MSCs-mt transfer increased RLBP1 and Parkin expression, whereas curcumin reduced Parkin expression. hE-MSCs-mt transfer upregulated Parkin, RPE65, Pink1, and RLBP1 expressions, with curcumin enhancing RPE65 expression. hWJ-MSCs-mt and curcumin combined more effectively downregulated expressions of stress-related genes (Nrf2, Ire1α, NOX4) and improved expression of mitochondrial function gene (TOMM20). hE-MSCs-mt transfer with curcumin synergistically enhanced expression of retinal health markers (RPE65, RLBP1) and downregulated expression of damage-associated genes (HTRA1, ARMS2) in AMD models. Conclusion: Curcumin combined with hWJ-MSCs-mt or hE-MSCs-mt is a potential AMD therapy owing to its anti-inflammatory properties; however, further in vivo and human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

Hybrid silver nanoparticles with controlled morphology as efficient substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Jerczynski, Krzysztof; Muszynska, Julita; Demirci, Gokhan; Cetinkaya, Onur; Filipczak, Paulina; Nowaczyk, Grzegorz; Grobelny, Jaroslaw; Matyjaszewski, Krzysztof; Kozanecki, Marcin; Pietrasik, Joanna

This work reports on the efficient performance of hybrids particles with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) distributed within single polymer molecules with star-like topology as Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) supports. First, the library of the star-like polymers with poly (acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene (PAA-b-PS) arms was obtained via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a “core-first” approach. Then, hybrid silver nanoparticles were synthesized in a controlled way within the prepared single molecules playing the role of molecular templates for AgNPs. Finally, the hybrid particles were tested as novel substrates for SERS using crystal violet as an analyte. Synthesized star-like templates had varied number of arms within the single star, the order of PAA and PS blocks, their degree of polymerization, and the molar ratio of the carboxylic groups of PAA block to the nanoparticles’ precursor. Additionally, the minimum analyte concentration required for SERS was determined. The number of arms within a polymer template plays a crucial role in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles and observed SERS effect. Prepared substrates were stable for long time and allowed the detection of the analytes on the nanomolar level.

Bio-engineering of 3-D cell sheets for diabetic rats: Interaction between mesenchymal stem cells and beta cells in functional islet regeneration system

Duman, Busra Oncel; Sariboyaci, Ayla Eker; Karaoz, Erdal

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that emerges with the destruction of beta cells of pancreatic Langerhans islets. Three different therapeutical approaches have been developed so far; pancreas transplantation, islet transplantation, and cell-based therapies. Bioengineering cell sheets for tissue generating is one of the latest approaches that have been used to construct cell-sheets instead of single cells so that it mimics the in vivo environments more. In this study, extra-hepatic functional islet tissue was constructed by transferring the 3-D beta cells and GFP labelled MSCs MSC sheets to the subcutaneous site of rats with STZ-induced diabetes. rBM-MSCs and beta cells were cultured on the 6-well PIPAAm culture dishes. Obtained rBM-MSCs as two-cell sheets and beta cells cultured in droplets with matrigel has transplanted into the dorsal subcutaneous area of diabetic rats. Fasting blood glucose levels and body weights were evaluated for 30 days after transplantation. Immunocytochemistry analysis for the anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenetic effects of MSCs on the 30th day of subcutaneous cell transplantation. All recipient rats transplanted with beta-cells with MSCs returned toward normoglycemia by day 5 and remained at this level for 30 days. Immunocytochemical analyses supported that the MSCs and beta cells preserved their viability and function. MSCs secrete cytokines and growth factors TGF-β and IL-6; MSCs of the important features of the anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to apoptosis of beta cells preserve graft explained by inhibition. In transplantation of MSCs induced angiogenesis and neovascularization, PECAM-1 and GFP positive simultaneously determining endothelial cells was observed indicating. Subcutaneous 3D beta-cell transplantation would be possible with the MSC-sheets as a feeder layer of beta cells. The beta-cell line is glucose-sensitive and has a high insulin release potential, and can be used as an alternative to islets in in vivo transplant studies.
