Tamoxifen-Based Dimers: Design, Synthesis, Cell Viability Evaluation on Breast Cancer Cells, and Computational Insights

Ertugrul, Berrak; Aytatli, Abdulmelik; Karatas, Omer Faruk; Essiz, Selcuk; Aksakal, Fatma; Saracoglu, Nurullah

Tamoxifen (TMX) resistance presents a significant challenge in the treatment of ER+ breast cancer. In this study, four novel tamoxifen-based dimers were synthesized and evaluated for their antitumor activities. Among these, (Z,Z)-1 exhibited potent antiproliferative effects in ER+ cells, demonstrating selective toxicity toward cancer cells over normal cells. (Z,Z)-1 significantly outperformed tamoxifen with IC50 values of 9.18 μM (24 h) and 6.86 μM (48 h) against MCF-7 cells. Additionally, it showed greater selectivity toward ER+ breast cancer cells compared with both triple-negative cancer cells and non-cancerous cells. Mechanistic studies indicated that (Z,Z)-1 induces apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through a cell-cycle-independent mechanism, unlike TMX, which arrests cells at the G0/G1 phase. These findings suggest that (Z,Z)-1 may be a promising candidate for further development as an alternative to tamoxifen therapy in ER+ breast cancer treatment. The docking studies revealed that (Z,Z)-1 exhibits the strong binding affinity to ERα, highlighting its potential as a promising therapeutic candidate for ER+ breast cancer treatment.

This study details the synthesis, characterization of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand and their metal complexes Ni(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) for anticancer assessment. These ligands were prepared by condensation reaction between 1,2-phenylenediamine in combinations with 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde, and 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde, producing distinctive molecular structures. Comprehensive analysis of their structural and electronic properties were conducted using elemental analysis, UV–Vis, FT-IR. 1H NMR, 13C-NMR spectroscopy, supplemented by magnetic moment measurements and fluorescence studies. The biological efficacy of the Schiff base derivatives was tested against DLD1 colon cancer cells, with cellular imaging employed to observe their effects. Notably, cytotoxicity assays showed IC50 values of 38.4 µM for ligand L1′and 7.3 µM for ligand L2′, indicating strong activity against colorectal carcinoma (CRC) cells. Significantly, both compounds exhibited minimal toxicity toward healthy epithelial cells (IC50 > 200 µM), demonstrating their selective anticancer potential.

Awareness and Educational Effectiveness of the ToothSOS Mobile Application for Traumatic Dental Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Aykanat, Berkehan; Ayhan, Muhammed; Özyürek, Hande; Ayaz, Bilal

Background/Aim: ToothSOS is a free International Association of Dental Traumatology application giving guideline-based first-aid instructions for traumatic dental injuries; no synthesis specific to it exists. This review assessed awareness of the application, its educational effectiveness and its reported quality and utilisation. Material and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar, with supplementary sources, were searched on 5 August 2026 without language or date restrictions. Studies addressing any of these were eligible. With one conflict-of-interest exception, screening, extraction and appraisal were independent and in duplicate, using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and a review-specific appraisal. Awareness was pooled using a binomial–normal generalised linear mixed model with a prespecified subgroup analysis by population type. Certainty was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Results: Twenty-one studies were included. Fourteen awareness studies included 4576 participants; eight were conducted in Türkiye. Awareness was 27.1% (95% confidence interval 13.4–47.1) among dental professionals and students, 3.1% (1.0–8.8) among non-dental health professionals and students and 1.6% (0.6–4.1) among lay populations. Pooled across all populations it was 5.0% (1.8–13.1), with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 96.5%) and a prediction interval of 0.1%–79.2%; this summarises the included samples rather than any global population. Three uncontrolled studies (298 participants) reported immediate knowledge gains too heterogeneous to pool; at 1 month their pooled standardised mean change was 2.33 (1.48–3.18). Certainty was very low for awareness and educational outcomes. Conclusions: Awareness was particularly low in non-dental health and lay samples. Population and geographic heterogeneity limit generalisation. Short-term knowledge gains do not establish sustained learning or improved management of actual injuries, and application-quality findings rest on an unvalidated review-specific appraisal. These findings support evaluating targeted dissemination and longer-term clinical outcomes. Trial Registration: PROSPERO; submitted 28 July 2026 and formally registered 9 August 2026, after the searches.

Evaluation of Dental Trauma Knowledge and ToothSOS Application Awareness Among Emergency Physicians

Aykanat, Berkehan; Özyürek, Hande; Sezer, Meryem Çoban; Ayaz, Bilal; Bayar, Ayşe Elif; Keskin, Etkin; Özyürek, Taha

Background/Aim: Emergency physicians are among the first healthcare professionals to manage traumatic dental injuries, yet knowledge deficiencies may compromise early care. This study evaluated emergency physicians' knowledge of traumatic dental injury management, ToothSOS awareness, and factors independently associated with overall knowledge. Materials and Methods: This questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted among emergency physicians in Turkey between April 2 and May 19, 2026. The survey assessed demographic and professional characteristics, traumatic dental injury knowledge, ToothSOS awareness, and willingness to use the application. Item-level associations were analyzed using chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests. An overall knowledge score, ranging from 0 to 8, was analyzed using univariable comparisons and multivariable linear regression. Factors associated with willingness to use ToothSOS were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. Results: A total of 208 emergency physicians were included. Correct-response rates ranged from 47.1% for the first intervention for an avulsed permanent tooth to 91.8% for identifying the most commonly affected teeth. ToothSOS awareness was 1.0%, although 79.6% of unaware participants stated they would consider using the application. The mean overall knowledge score was 5.23 ± 1.48. Previous dental trauma training and clinical exposure to traumatic dental injury cases were associated with higher scores in univariable analyses; only clinical exposure remained an independent predictor after adjustment. No factor independently predicted willingness to use ToothSOS. Conclusions: Emergency physicians demonstrated moderate overall traumatic dental injury knowledge, with deficiencies in avulsion management and referral decisions. Previous clinical exposure to such cases was the only independent predictor of higher knowledge scores, supporting structured training rather than reliance on incidental experience. Low ToothSOS awareness, despite high willingness to use it, supports integrating dental trauma education and digital decision-support tools into emergency medicine training and clinical protocols.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles from Citrus reticulata Peels for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensing of 4-Aminobenzenesulfonamide

Dar, Umar Ali; Altuner, Elif Esra; Akocak, Suleyman; Issa, Ghassan; Ozalp, Veli Cengiz

Increasing utilization of sulfonamide derivatives as antibacterial agents has created serious challenges in terms of environmental pollution and antimicrobial resistance. In this respect, there is a compelling need for a highly sensitive and selective analytical tool for detecting such antibiotics in trace concentrations. This work represents a green strategy for developing an electrochemical biosensor for the determination of 4-aminobenzenesulfonamide based on bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) prepared from peel extract of Citrus reticulata fruit. The phytochemicals present in the peel extracts played a dual role of reduction and stabilization during the synthesis of Ag NPs. Synthesized NPs were well characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV–Vis), and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The Ag NPs showed considerable improvement in electrocatalysis in comparison to the bare glassy carbon electrode. The fabricated sensor gave an excellent linear calibration curve with a high value of R2 (=0.999), along with a low limit of detection (LOD = 0.65 µM) and limit of quantification (LOQ = 2.1 µM).

Development of Fluorimetric Method for Controlled Drug Release From Vinyl Propionate-co-Maleic Anhydride Polymer Modified With Paracetamol

Memis, Yilmaz; Gunduz, S. Beniz; Altuner, Elif Esra; Tatli, Havva Nur; Ozen, Gurkan; Okudan, Ahmet; Civil, Serife; Dar, Umar Ali

A novel pH-responsive polymeric drug delivery system is developed by covalently binding the active pharmaceutical ingredient paracetamol (PAR) to a synthesized vinyl propionate-co-maleic anhydride (VPR-co-MA) copolymer. The controlled release of PAR from the resulting VPR-co-MA-PAR conjugate was investigated in vitro at various physiological pH values (2.0, 4.5, 7.4, and 9.0) at 37°C over a 6 h-period. A fluorimetric method was utilized to quantify the released PAR, with optimal excitation and emission wavelengths determined to be 330 and 433 nm, respectively. The results demonstrated a distinct pH-dependent release profile. After 6 h, the cumulative drug release was significantly suppressed at acidic gastric pH 2.0 (42.23%), whereas it was substantially higher at neutral and alkaline conditions, reaching 71.29% at pH 7.4 and a maximum of 74.46% at pH 9.0. The pronounced difference in release rates confirms the system's ability to limit premature drug release in the stomach while promoting targeted delivery in the intestinal tract. This VPR-co-MA-PAR conjugate shows significant promise as a carrier for the controlled oral delivery of paracetamol.

The use of catalysts is one of the most important parameters in producing hydrogen energy. Zinc-oxide/cobalt nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical methods and doped on f-MWCNT (ZnO/Co@f-MWCNT NPs) as a supporting material. Various characterization techniques were used to examine the structural and morphological properties of the synthesized nanoparticles (ZnO/Co@f-MWCNT NPs). According to the XRD characterization results, the average crystal particle size of NPs was calculated as 2.10 nm, and according to TEM analysis, the average particle size was calculated to be 2.24 ± 0.5 nm. The catalytic activity of ZnO/Co@f-MWCNT NPs toward hydrogen production was determined using NaBH4 as the hydrogen source. Studies were carried out on how the catalytic activity of ZnO/Co@f-MWCNT NPs would vary in different parameters. The average reusability performance achieved after 4 cycles for hydrogen production is 89%. Turnover frequency (TOF) according to catalytic activity, activation energy (Ea), enthalpy (∆H), and entropy (∆S) were found to be 2467.4 min−1, 16.36 kj/mol, 13.79 kj/mol and -122.8 J/mol.K, respectively. This study provides guidance for hydrogen production, and other energy studies, and supporting agents in the future.

Barut, Kenan; Yildiz, Mehmet; Beşer, Ömer Faruk; Haslak, Fatih; Gunalp, Aybuke; Konte, Elif Kılıç; Aslan, Esma; Gül, Ümit; Akay, Nergis; Adrovic, Amra

Intro: In this prospective interventional study, we aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the hepatitis A vaccine in patients with autoinflammatory diseases undergoing canakinumab and tocilizumab treatments. Methods: A total of 24 patients with autoinflammatory diseases on canakinumab and tocilizumab treatments and 39 healthy children who were seronegative for hepatitis A were included in the study. All participants were vaccinated with 2 doses of inactivated hepatitis A vaccine at 6-month intervals. One month after the last vaccination, venous blood samples were collected from each participant, and the anti-HAV IgM and IgG titers were measured. Results: The patient group consisted of 19 patients with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) and 5 patients with cryopyrin-associated periodic fever. The mean age of the patient group and the healthy controls were 14.1 ± 3.7 and 12.4 ± 3.2 years, respectively. All patients with cryopyrin-associated periodic fever and 52.6% (10/19) of the patients with sJIA were on canakinumab. The remaining 9 patients (47.3%) with sJIA were using tocilizumab. Among sJIA patients, 15 were also on methotrexate, and 14 were on prednisolone. All of the participants were negative for hepatitis A serology. After two doses of hepatitis A vaccine, all the patients with autoinflammatory diseases (24/24) and 84.6% (33/39) of the healthy controls were detected as positive for anti-HAV IgG (p = 0.04). The mean anti-HAV Ig G titers of the patient group and the control group one month after the last dose of vaccination were 5.25 ± 1.49 IU/L and 10.5 ± 7.02 IU/L, respectively (p < 0.001). Neither disease flares nor adverse effects related to vaccination were observed within the study period. Conclusion: Hepatitis A vaccine is effective and safe in children with autoinflammatory diseases on biologic therapy. Long-term follow-up data, including larger patient cohorts, are needed to draw a solid conclusion about the safety of hepatitis A vaccine in patients receiving canakinumab and tocilizumab therapy.

Yildirim Keskin, Alev; Özpancar Şolpan, Nurhan; Değirmenci, Hasan

Background: Hypertension (HT) is a global health problem. Although there are effective treatment protocols, patients have difficulty in adapting to regular use of drugs, diet, and lifestyle changes. Mobile apps can be a potential alternative for managing HT and improving self-care behavior. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of mobile application follow-up on treatment compliance and self-care management in patients with HT. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in November 2021 and March 2022 with 40 experimental and 40 control group patients with HT. Research data were collected using a patient information form, “Hill-Bone Hypertension Treatment Compliance Scale (HBHTTCS),” “Hypertension Self-Care Profile-Motivation Scale (HTSPMS),” a mobile application program (daily blood pressure, pulse, medication, diet, exercise tracking) uploaded to the mobile phones of the patients, and individual motivational messages. Results: The mean total score of the HBHTTCS at Week 6 was 14.57 ± 1.89 and the mean total score of the HTSPMS was 78.15 ± 2.05. There was a statistically significant difference in mean total HTSPMS (p = 0.000) and HBHTTCS (p = 0.000) scores and mean scores on medical (p = 0.002) and nutrition (p = 0.002) subscales of HBHTTCS between the first interview (1st-week follow-up) and the last interview (6th-week follow-up) of patients in the intervention group. Conclusions: This study showed that mobile application follow-up increased motivation levels and treatment compliance in patients with HT and resulted in better self-care. These positive findings indicate importance of integrating mobile applications in the disease management of HT patients. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT05334446, https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05334446.

Cervical proprioception and dysphagia severity in multiple sclerosis: A cross-sectional clinical analysis

Abakay, Hanife; Yetkin, M. Fatih; Ayşe, G.Ü.Ç.; Şekercan, Gizem

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dysphagia severity and neck proprioception, pain, and mood in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). The individuals were divided into two groups according to the severity of dysphagia: dysphagia group (n = 13) with a score of 3 and above on the Dysphagia Assessment Scale in Multiple Sclerosis (DYMUS) scale and mild dysphagia group (n = 13) with a score of 2 and below. Clinical swallowing function was evaluated with the Turkish version of the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (T-EAT-10) and DYMUS. Proprioception was assessed with a laser by noting the deviation from the center target in centimeters. Neck pain severity was assessed with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and mood was assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Individuals with severe dysphagia demonstrated statistically significantly greater proprioceptive impairment in cervical extension and right rotation. A significant difference was also found between the two groups in terms of clinical swallowing evaluations, neck pain status, and mood measurements. The findings suggest that proprioceptive deficits, increased pain, and mood disturbances are closely associated with dysphagia severity in MS. A multidimensional approach addressing dysphagia, proprioception, and pain management may be beneficial in optimizing dysphagia rehabilitation in patients with MS.

Development of an amperometric biosensor that can determine the amount of glucose in the blood using the glucose oxidase enzyme: Preparation of polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film

Uzumer, Tugce Yagmur; Cete, Servet; Tekeli, Yener; Altuner, Elif Esra

In this study, a new amperometric biosensor was developed for glucose determination. For this purpose, polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film was prepared by electropolymerization of aniline and pyrrole with poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) on a platinum plate. The best working conditions of the polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film were determined. The glucose oxidase enzyme was immobilized by the entrapment method in polyaniline–polypyrrole–poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) film. Glucose determination was made based on the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide, which is formed as a result of the enzymatic reaction on the surface of the prepared biosensor at +0.40 V. The working range for the glucose determination of the biosensor was determined. The effects of pH and temperature on the response of the glucose biosensor were investigated. The reusability and shelf life of the biosensor were determined. The effects of interference in biological environments on the response of the biosensor were investigated. Glucose determination was made in the biological fluid (blood) with the prepared biosensor. This study has a feature that sheds light on biosensor studies to be developed for the detection of substances in the human body, such as glucose, uric acid, and urea. This article will set an example for future scientific research on the development of a sensor for other biological fluids in the human body, such as the sensor developed for blood samples. In addition, this developed sensor provides an innovation that improves the quality of life of patients by allowing them to constantly monitor their glucose levels and intervene when necessary.

Synthesis and evaluation of multitarget new 2-aminothiazole derivatives as potential anti-Alzheimer's agents

Bardakkaya, Merve; Kilic, Burcu; Sagkan, Rahsan Ilıkcı; Aksakal, Fatma; Shakila, Shakila; Dogruer, Deniz S.

In this study, two diverse series of 2-aminothiazole-based multitarget compounds, one propenamide and the other propanamide derivatives, were designed and synthesized. Subsequently, their anticholinesterease and antioxidant (ORAC) activities were tested. Among them, compound 3e was the most potent acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor (AChE IC50 = 0.5 μM, butyrylcholinesterase [BChE] IC50 = 14.7 μM) and compound 9e was the most potent BChE inhibitor (AChE IC50 = 3.13 μM, BChE IC50 = 0.9 μM). Kinetic experiments showed that both compounds were mixed-type inhibitors. According to the anticholinesterease activity results, five compounds (3e, 4e, 5e, 9d, and 9e) were selected for further activity studies, all of which are dual cholinesterase inhibitors. Then, selected compounds were investigated in terms of their metal chelation activity. Moreover, their neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced damage in the PC12 cell line were evaluated at 10 μM and the results showed that the neuroprotective effect of 3e was 53% compared with the reference ferulic acid (77%). 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) results of selected compounds revealed that the compounds were noncytotoxic. Additionally, 3e was more effective in reducing lipopolysaccharides-induced interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and nitric oxide (NO) production in the human monocyte derived from patient with acute monocytic leukemia cell line compared with other selected compounds. Finally, a molecular docking study was also performed.

Prevention of microbial colonization of feeding tubes in the intensive care unit

Ozen, Nurten; Sis Celik, Aslı; Terzioglu, Fusun; Ozen, Volkan; Ozmen, Ozgur; Kose, Sema; Tosun, Betul; Dogan, Nazim; Ardic, Busra; Atabeyoglu Cimen, Bahar

Background: Various microorganisms which increase the mortality rate in the intensive care unit (ICU) cause microbial colonization of the nasogastric tube (NGT) and use the NGT as a reservoir. Aim: To detect the colonization on the NGT and to determine the effect that training regarding hand hygiene, NGT management, and enteral feeding (EF) provided to ICU nurses and auxiliary service staff (ASS) has on the level of NGT colonization. Study Design: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control design was used in this study. Microbial samples were taken from the outer and inner parts of NGT. The microorganisms were categorized as: group 1, no risk; group 2, low risk pathogenic; group 3, high-risk pathogenic group. The training was given to nurses (n = 15) and ASS (n = 7). Hand hygiene, NGT, and EF care training are provided to nurses and ASS by researchers. A total of three training sessions were scheduled to be held in 3 weeks so that all health care staff members were trained. Each session lasted 2 h in total. Patients were assigned to a group if one of the microorganisms presented on the outer surface of the patient's feeding tube and/or on the hub. The hand hygiene compliance was evaluated by direct observation according to the World Health Organization hand hygiene indications. Results: The study was conducted with 46 patients. Evaluating the patients for the presence of microorganisms before education revealed that 4.3% were in group 1, 21.8% were in group 2, and 73.9% were in group 3. After the education, evaluating the samples for the presence of microorganisms revealed that 39.1% were in group 1, 13% were in group 2, and 47.8% were in group 3. A statistically significant difference was found between the number of samples included in the groups after the participants had received training (H = 8.186; p =.017). Conclusions: An NGT could act as a reservoir of microbial colonization and high-risk microorganisms could be on the tube. Providing training not only to nurses but also to ASS will help reduce the risk of colonization. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Eliminating such colonization with effective hand hygiene during NGT feeding is a cost-effective method. Providing training not only to nurses but also to ASS will help obtain the optimum benefit from patient care.

Determining the relationship between magnet properties of hospitals and the professional values of the nurses: A cross-sectional study

    Evrenol Öçal, Simge; Terzioğlu, Füsun

Aim: To identify the relationship between the characteristics of hospitals in recruiting and retaining nurses (magnet properties) and nurses' professional values. Background: In Turkey, there are a limited number of hospitals with the characteristics to enable nurses to stay in their institutions. The magnet properties of these hospitals and the professional values of the nurses working in these hospitals are not known. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional research included 612 nurses working in six hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International. Data were collected using the Nursing Professional Values Scale-Revised (NPVS-R) and the Essentials of Magnetism Scale (EOM II). Results: The mean NPVS-R score was high 102.0 (26–130). However, the mean EOM II score was found to be low at 2.2 (1.0–3.4). As the magnet properties of the hospitals increased, the professional values of the nurses decreased. Conclusion: There was a negative correlation between the magnet properties of hospitals and the professional values of the nurses. Implications for Nursing Management: The findings of this study highlight the necessity of creating a working environment with high magnet characteristics, which also includes the professional values of nurses. Nurse managers should investigate the reasons behind the low magnet properties of hospitals, raise awareness, and plan interventions to increase magnet properties of hospitals. Creating a supportive working environment, promotion of the salaries and work environment and decreasing workload are some of the important intervention areas in attracting and keeping nurses in the institution.

Synthesis, anti-TB activities, and molecular docking studies of 4-(1,2,3-triazoyl)arylmethanone derivatives

Turkmen, Yunus; Yagiz Erdemir, Güler; Yuksel Mayda, Pelin; Akdemir, Atilla; Gunaydin Akyildiz, Aysenur; Altundas, Aliye

Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) are leading causes of human death. Antibiotics are effective molecules to combat bacterial infections by affecting the processes required for bacterial cell growth and proliferation. The development of new antibiotics has become an important issue as overdosed or incorrect use of antibiotic lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. In this study, a new series of 4-(1,2,3-triazoyl)arylmethanone derivatives has been synthesized using the one-pot Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling/Oxidative Cycloaddition strategy to overcome the aforementioned problems. New compounds were characterized by using spectroscopic techniques (1H, 13C-APT-NMR, FT-IR, and HRMS-TOF). In vitro antimycobacterial activities of the arylmethanone derivatives against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv standard strain were examined using the resazurin microplate method in the presence of streptomycin and rifampycin as standard medicines. Bioactive assays demonstrated promising results that some of the synthesized 4-(1,2,3-triazoyl)arylmethanone derivatives exhibited good anti-TB activities. Notably, compounds 6b, 6f, and 6g gave the most potent efficiency with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 4 μg/ml (12.8, 11.7, and 12.8 μΜ, respectively). Among the synthesized compounds, the cytotoxicity measurements of the 6b, 6f, 6g, 6d, and 6v derivatives were screened and it was found that the 6f derivative did not show any cytotoxicity. Molecular docking analyses are utilized to identify the binding mode and the key interactions between target compounds and the ligand-binding site of M. tuberculosis enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase enzyme (MtInhA, EC 1.3.1.9). The docking results were in agreement with the in vitro results, which confirm the synthesized ligands bind to MtInha with moderate to low affinity.

An examination of effects of intimate partner violence on children: A cross-sectional study conducted in a paediatric emergency unit in Turkey

Uysal Yalçın, Suna; Zonp, Zeynep; Dinç, Sermin; Bilgin, Hülya

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women causes inadequate and unbalanced nutrition in children aged 0–5 years and adversely affects their growth. Aim: To examine the impact of intimate partner violence on a child's growth regarding the medical diagnosis in paediatric patients under 5 years of age, growth of the child, and the mother's exposure to intimate partner violence. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 166 children admitted to a paediatric emergency department, and their mothers. Results: Women exposed to emotional violence and controlling behaviour during pregnancy had children prone to being overweight and obese. A mothers lifetime exposure to physical violence had an adverse effect on their children's wasting and moderate wasting. In contrast, mothers' exposure to emotional violence had a direct impact on a child's wasting and moderate wasting. Conclusion: The lifetime effect of domestic violence may begin at birth. This vulnerability leads to negative outcomes in both children and women regarding biopsychosocial development. Implications for nursing management: Nurses and midwives in primary health care services and one-on-one care should be trained to evaluate prospective mothers and children aged 0–5 regarding violence and its effects on the child's growth.

Validity and reliability of the Family Empowerment Scale for parents of children with cleft lip and/or palate

Boztepe, Handan; Çınar, Sevil; Kanbay, Yalçın; Acımış, Burcu; Özgür, Figen; Terzioglu, Füsun

Background: Empowerment is recognized as a crucial concept in strengthening the position of parents in healthcare services. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish Family Empowerment Scale (FES). Methods: This methodological study was conducted between January and March 2021, with 348 family members actively caring for their children in the age group of 0–18 years with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). The English FES was translated into Turkish using back translation and modified so that it is generic and convenient for all families. The construct validity, internal validity, internal consistency, and split-half test reliability and responsiveness of the Turkish FES were examined. Results: The original FES structure with three factors (family, health services provided to the child and community participation) and 34 items was verified in Turkish culture. This obtained structure can explain 66% of the variance of the relevant concept. Scores of parents ranged between 34 and 170 points. Increasing scores indicated a positive significance regarding family empowerment. The Cronbach's α reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated as 0.976. Conclusion: The study findings and the goodness-of-fit values indicated that the FES and its Turkish version are a valid and reliable measurement instrument to be used in Turkish culture.
