Impact of guideline-based prompting on the large language model performance in dental trauma management clinical decision-making

Kaşıkçı, Sena; Şirinoğlu, Ebru; Özdemir, Olcay

This study evaluated the impact of guideline-based prompting on the performance of large language models (LLMs) in answering dental trauma–related questions. Sixteen multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and sixteen open-ended questions (OEQs) derived from the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines were used. ChatGPT-4o, Gemini-2.5 Flash, and DeepSeek v3.2 were tested under two conditions: with and without guideline support. Questions were asked three times daily over three consecutive days using independent chat sessions. In the guideline-based condition, the dental trauma guideline was uploaded and models were instructed to answer according to the document. Responses were evaluated using predefined answer keys and a structured rubric. Statistical analyses were performed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, aligned rank transform (ART) analysis, and Bonferroni-adjusted multiple comparisons. Multiple-choice performance was consistently high across all models, with no significant effects of day, time, or AI model. Guideline-based prompting substantially improved performance and guideline concordance on open-ended questions. In the guideline-supported condition, DeepSeek achieved a median score of 32, while ChatGPT and Gemini achieved median scores of 30. Without guideline support, median scores decreased to 26, 20, and 23, respectively. All models achieved 100% accuracy on MCQs with guideline support, whereas accuracy ranged from 81.2% to 100% without guideline support. Significant differences between AI models were observed for OEQ scores (p < 0.001). Guideline-based prompting improved guideline concordance and overall performance, particularly for open-ended dental trauma questions. These findings support the use of guideline grounding to enhance the guideline concordance and reliability of LLM-generated responses while emphasizing the continued need for clinician oversight.

Activated carbon based Cobalt nanoparticles (Co@AC NPs), considered in the context of hydrogen energy, which is a renewable and sustainable energy, were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, and their catalytic activities were tested. For this, hydrogen production tests were carried out with the help of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) methanolysis of Co@AC NPs synthesized by the thermal method. Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier transmission spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization tests were performed. According to the TEM characterization result, it has been observed that the NPs have a spherical shape and an average size of 2.52 ± 0.92 nm. Then, using the catalytic studies, it was observed that hydrogen production’s reusability is found to be 86%. The activation energy (Ea), enthalpy (∆H), and entropy (∆S) values were found to be 20.28 kJ⋅mol−1, 17.74 kJ⋅mol−1, and −125.97 J⋅mol−1 K−1, respectively. The obtained values have yielded excellent results and guide future sustainable and renewable hydrogen energy studies by reducing costs, ensuring environmental sustainability by avoiding the formation of undesirable by-products, and producing hydrogen from NaBH4 through its high catalytic properties.

The Editors-in-Chief have retracted this article because of concerns regarding the validity of the research reported in this work. A review conducted by the journal found that the reported average crystalline size for silver nanoparticles (NPs) as determined by an analysis of the XRD intensity peaks (Fig. 3) is not consistent with the average size determined by TEM imaging (Fig. 4a), and that the former analysis was not adequately reported in the article. Furthermore, there is lack of agreement between the TEM result shown in Fig. 4 and the size distribution of NPs presented in the inset. The authors were asked to comment on these concerns, but their explanation was deemed unsatisfactory. The Editors-in-Chief no longer have confidence in the research presented in this article. The authors disagree with this retraction.

Innovative Repair Method for Septal Perforation Repair: The Fascia Lata and Platelet-Rich Plasma Fusion Technique

Hanci, Deniz; Onaran, Öykü İzel; Altun, Huseyin; Uyar, Yavuz

Background: Nasal septal perforation (NSP) is a structural flaw that affects the mucosa, cartilage, and bone of the nasal septum, often stemming from septoplasty as the most frequent cause. The natural healing of a perforated septum is uncommon; on the contrary, it tends to deteriorate progressively. Various surgical methods have been outlined for the repair of NSP. In this research, the authors introduce an innovative approach utilizing fascia lata graft with PRP for the restoration of NSP across diverse sizes. Methods: The researchers conducted a retrospective analysis involving 25 patients who underwent repair for nasal septal perforation (NSP) from January 2021 to January 2023. Grafts were obtained, and the perforation was addressed using an open rhinoplasty technique, followed by the insertion and suturing of the graft. Results: The mean size of the septal perforations was 17 mm horizontally and 18 mm vertically. The mean follow-up period was 12 months. Complete closure of NSP was achieved in 23 out of 25 patients (92%). Among the cases, 17 were male (68%), and the age ranged from 25 to 45 years with a mean of 38.7. Eight cases (32%) were smokers. At 12 months postoperatively, three large-sized NSPs were closed successfully, while two medium-sized NSPs did not achieve closure due to smoking. Conclusion: The Fascia Lata and Platelet-Rich plasma fusion technique for the closure of nasal septal perforations is a secure and dependable method, demonstrating a notable success rate. This approach should be regarded as a viable option for individuals dealing with nasal septal perforation. Synthesis of Bimetallic Nickel-Cobalt Nanoparticles Supported by Functional Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Chemical Methods: Characterization and Hydrogen Energy Generation

Zare, Najmeh; Karimi, Fatemeh; Altuner, Elif Esra; Mashkoor, Hussein; Tiri, Rima Nour Elhouda; Gulbagca, Fulya; Bijad, Majede; Cherif, Ali; Sen, Fatih

In this study, nickel-cobalt@functionalized multi-walled carbon nanoparticles (NiCo@f-MWCNT NPs) were synthesized, analysed, and used for hydrogen generation via methanolysis on NaBH4. For the NPs synthesis, two steps were conducted (i.e., i: MWCNT was functionalized in an acid medium to support NPs (f-MWCNT); ii: NiCo NPs were synthesized and supplemented with f-MWCNT). Various characterization techniques were used to examine the morphological structure of NiCo@f-MWCNT NPs. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) results showed that the NPs were sized as 3.941 ± 1.094 nm with a spherical structure. The X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) results indicated an average crystalline size of 1.46 nm. The evaluation of the catalytic performance for hydrogen production revealed that the turnover frequency (TOF) was calculated to be 2934.4 min− 1 with activation energy (Ea) and enthalpy (∆H) of 39.29 kJ/mol and 36.74 kJ/mol, respectively, which indicates high viability for hydrogen transport and generation application and processes.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Repaglinide Tablets: Effect of Perforations on Hypromellose-Based Drug Release

    Wadi, Ahmed; Rauf, Muhammed Abdur

Purpose: Drug release from hypromellose-based tablets involves the formation of characteristic dry cores surrounded by outer gel layers in aqueous media. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of perforation sizes on the dissolution of repaglinide from three-dimensionally (3D) printed tablets with two viscosity grades of hypromellose as rate-controlling polymer. Methods: Printing pastes of appropriate consistency were developed and fed into a bioplotter cartridge to extrude strands/filaments. Tablets were printed in a crisscross pattern with 1.0, 1.3, and 1.6 mm of inter-strand distances. Printed tablets were characterized and repaglinide dissolution data were evaluated mathematically. Results: Scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the sealing of the defect-free strands. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated potential interaction of ingredients above 150 °C which suggested that the formulation, printing, and drying of tablets should be performed at room temperature. All of the tablets possessed acceptable size, shape, and mechanical strength. Repaglinide dissolution data were evaluated by similarity factor (f2), dissolution efficiency, and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) which revealed that drug release rate and extent could be gradually increased by increasing the perforation sizes inside the tablets. Korsmeyer-Peppas modeling of dissolution data showed that the drug release rate approached zero-order kinetics and the release mechanism was Super Case II. This mechanism implies that an outer layer of HPMC gel limits the swelling of the characteristic HPMC tablet cores. Conclusion: The cores in HPMC tablets usually remain dry for long time in aqueous media. Higher perforation sizes enhanced repaglinide dissolution rate from such tablets. This led us to conclude that different perforation sizes in the tablets must have caused differences in the structural consistency of the core. Perforation sizes played the dominant role over HPMC viscosity grades in determining repaglinide release.

Influence of annealing temperature in ITO thin films prepared by Thermionic Vacuum Arc (TVA) Technique

    Elmas, Saliha

In this research work, ITO thin film with 100 nm thickness was produced on a glass slide substrate by using the Thermionic Vacuum Arc (TVA) technique. After the deposition process, ITO thin film was annealed at 300, 400, and 480 °C in O2 ambient for 1 h. The effect of annealing temperatures on the optical, structural, and surface properties of the ITO thin film was investigated. Changes in the annealed ITO thin film characteristics were observed. The XRD results analysis showed a crystallization of the ITO thin films along (222) and (440) diffraction peaks after the annealing process. The band gap energy for the as-deposited ITO thin film was estimated as 3.82 eV, which increased from 3.96 to 4.11 eV for the annealed ITO thin films. The FESEM and AFM images of ITO thin films show a homogenous deposition, smooth, granular, and dense form. The CA mean of the as-deposited and annealed ITO thin films was measured in the range of 88°–33°. The experimental results showed that different annealing temperatures influenced the structural, optical, surface morphology and wettability properties of the ITO thin films.
